An introduction to the chemistry of carbon compounds,
including the study of bonding, structure, nomenclature,
physical and spectrosopic properties, methods of preparation
and reactivity of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides,
and alcohols. Separation and purification techniques are
stressed in the laboratory and reaction products are
analyzed by spectroscopic and chromatographic methods,
including GC, HPLC, FTIR, and FT-NMR. Three hours of lecture
and four hours of laboratory each week. Lab fee.
